Surgical equipment is a core category of medical devices supporting clinical surgery. Driven by advances in artificial intelligence, precision manufacturing and biomaterials, China's surgical equipment industry has moved from import dependence to independent innovation — and surgical robots are the most striking example.

Scaling Up: From Single-Product Breakthrough to Broad Adoption

Minimally invasive surgery continues to expand globally, with the global minimally invasive surgery market reaching approximately USD 29.87 billion in 2023. Surgical robots have emerged as the fastest-growing sub-segment, covering laparoscopic, orthopedic, urological and gynecological applications.

Internationally, Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci system, Medtronic's Hugo RAS and Johnson & Johnson's Ottava dominate the high end, with R&D now focusing on 4K 3D imaging, haptic feedback and image-guided closed-loop surgery.

Domestically, China has accelerated its domestic substitution. According to MedRobot's 2025 China Surgical Robot Sales Report, laparoscopic robot installations reached at least 229 units in 2025, up from 157 units in 2024, with domestic systems accounting for a growing share of new installations. Multi-port, single-port and remote surgery robots have all entered the market.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite progress, three key challenges remain:

  1. Core components — high-precision reducers and specialized chips still rely on imports;
  2. Closed-loop control — multimodal fusion and real-time feedback technology need further breakthroughs;
  3. Cost and accessibility — high purchase and maintenance costs limit adoption at primary care hospitals.

Looking ahead, the industry is moving toward:

  • Minimally invasive — flexible continuum structures and micro parallel drive for single-port and natural-orifice surgery;
  • Intelligent and remote — 5G-A/6G-enabled remote surgery with millisecond latency, AI real-time analysis and AR-assisted collaboration;
  • Diversified robots — soft robots for gastrointestinal and bronchial procedures, magnetically controlled micro-robots under MRI guidance, and bio-hybrid systems;
  • Affordable access — domestic components lowering prices, modular designs allowing hospitals to share a core unit with specialty add-ons, and innovative payment models including medical insurance coverage.

Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration Needed

Industry development requires coordinated effort: national R&D programs on core components, industry-education innovation platforms, differentiated business models for tertiary vs. primary hospitals, operator certification and "black box" surgical data recording, and adaptive regulatory frameworks for remote surgery and AI-assisted procedures.

China's surgical robot industry is entering a golden period — from localized breakthrough to scaled growth, moving toward precision, intelligence and accessibility.
